LEGO Will Revitalize Three Classic Themes in 2023

Updated: Jul 7

While it has been well documented that LEGO is planning to revitalize quite a few nostalgic themes from the early 2000s, we figured we'd compile together all of the information that has surfaced so far on what to expect in 2023 from these classic themes. Most recently an Instagram leak has shed new light on one of the most sought after themes from the 2000s—LEGO Bionicle.

With the recent release of LEGO ICONS Lion Knight's Castle (10305) and the LEGO ICONS Galaxy Explorer (10497), LEGO appeared to have breathed new life into Classic Themes. LEGO held a Fan Vote in which Classic Castle, owing its success to the consolidation of all Castle Themes' votes, won the majority vote by a small margin over LEGO Classic Space, and beat out LEGO Bionicle by quite a large margin. This obviously left many nostalgic LEGO fans disappointed with the results and many considered the consolidation of both LEGO Space and LEGO Castle to be an unfair advantage against LEGO Bionicle. It seems as though LEGO may have gotten the message with the overwhelming disappointment from both LEGO Classic Space and LEGO Bionicle fans, as there appears to be a LEGO Bionicle Promotional set in the works.

On Instagram, a notable LEGO Leak page has released some new information regarding a LEGO Bionicle set that is expected to release some time in 2023, but before you get too excited, it may not be coming in the format you'd expect. The leak announced the set would be a LEGO "Buildable Tahu Promo Set (40580) which—based on the set number beginning 405—indicates the set will be a LEGO Brickheadz set. Unless you specifically collect Brickheadz, this probably won't land on your radar around 2023's release schedule, but the fact that the Set Name suggests that it's a promotional set, that could still mean good news for the LEGO Bionicle community. It could very well indicate that LEGO is expecting to release another LEGO ICONS set in 2023 to appease the LEGO Bionicle Community.

This information also comes on the heels of a bombshell revelation that LEGO Lord of the Rings and LEGO Indiana Jones will also be returning in 2023—albeit, in a very limited capacity. For instance, LEGO Lord of the Rings is only expected to be releasing two new LEGO Brickheadz sets and one loosely rumored late release of a direct to consumer (D2C) set—which early rumors suggest it will be quite a pricy one, clocking in at more than $500 (USD).

As for LEGO Indiana Jones, there appears to be a genuine revitalization, with 2023 bringing to the market eight new sets featuring iconic scenes from the first four films. Most likely some of the later sets, or sets that we don't even know about yet, will feature some characters and scenes from the upcoming fifth installment, but for now we know at least the first four LEGO set will resurrect scenes from the series' first three films.
