What Are Reciprocal Tariffs?
Reciprocal tariffs are designed to match the tariffs other countries impose on U.S. goods—usually calibrated at the same or similar levels to promote fair trade. The policy establishes a minimum 10% rate for most nations, with higher rates for others based on trade imbalances or penalties.
In April 2025, President Trump used authority under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) to impose a 10% baseline tariff on all imports. This was soon followed by country-specific rates effective April 9, replacing the baseline where applicable.
As of August 2025, the finalized rates have taken effect, introducing significant duties on goods from specific nations, including a combined tariff structure for select imports. This may cause an increase in tariff charges in your country.
